Scottish whisky makers reel over U.S. tariffs

It’s a long way from Washington to the Arbikie Highland Estate on Scotland’s east coast …. But the pain of U.S. tariffs travels far. Scottish whisky makers say jobs and investment are under threat, after their single malt spirit was added to a raft of goods Washington has targeted in a dispute over aircraft subsidies. 460 million dollars worth could be hit, they say – over half the value of British products on the U.S. list. In Italy, it’s cheese, liquors and processed meats that’s sparked the outrage. Over half a billion dollars worth of goods there, according to its farmers’ association … While Spanish farmers think over a billion dollars of their products will suffer. And then there’s the political damage – though that, says European Commission spokesman Daniel Rosario, could ricochet back.
