Before ‘Moulin Rouge!’ hit theaters in 2001 the movie musical was in a rough place; there had been hugely successful animated musicals, but aside from that, Hollywood was mostly steering clear of the genre. Which is why it was such an audacious move when director Baz Luhrmann, hot off the success of ‘Romeo + Juliet,’ decided to revive the form with a 1890s-set jukebox musical featuring pop songs from the past few decades. It would prove a bold, divisive, colorful success. The story of Satine and Christian is perhaps most famous for its while opening 30 minutes, which feature one of the grandest entrances in modern movie history: Satine (Nicole Kidman) swinging through the main dance hall of the famous Paris club. In this exclusive interview, Luhrmann and costume and production designer Catherine Martin reveal how they created the magical moment – and how Kidman managed to get through it without even a scraped knee. This behind-the-scenes breakdown of the swinging entrance is part of Rotten Tomatoes’ Most Memorable Moments series, celebrating the most electrifying, terrifying, moving, and hilarious movie moments from the last 21 years.
