Marine survival expert rates 9 ocean survival scenes in movies and TV

The UK military’s chief survival instructor, John Hudson, looks at nine sea-based survival scenes from popular TV shows and movies and rates them based on realism.

He looks at “All Is Lost” (2013), “Titanic” (1997), “Unbroken” (2014), “Adrift” (2018), “Cast Away” (2000), “Sanctum” (2011), “The Shallows” (2016), “The Perfect Storm” (2000), “Life of Pi” (2012), and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” S7E2 (2011).

Hudson created the UK military’s survival manual. He specializes in teaching rescue at sea, and he conducts training in the UK’s West Country. He has developed safety training for Airbus Defence and Space’s security team and other corporate clients. He was previously a consultant and expert on Discovery’s “Dude, You’re Screwed” and is the author of “How to Survive: Lessons for Everyday Life from the Extreme World.”
