EXPERIMENT | Crush a can with air pressure

Requires adult supervision! Here’s a cool experiment you can try using materials you already have at home to witness air pressure. You will need:

-an empty soda can
-1/2 cup of water
-bowl of ice water
-tongs
-a potholder
-a stove.

Take an empty soda can and add about 1/2 cup of water into the can. Place the can of water on burner and turn on the stove. Once the water in the can boils use the tongs to quickly place the can inverted into the ice water. The can will quickly implode!

How does it work? The steam from the boiling water exerts more pressure on the inside of the can. Once the can is placed in the cold water, the vapor quickly condenses into water which lowers the pressure in the can. Atmospheric pressure is now much higher than the pressure inside of the can, which crushes the can.
