15 years after bombing – man guilty of assassinating Lebanon’s former Prime Minister – BBC News

15 years after a massive bombing in Beirut killed Lebanon’s former prime minister Rafik Hariri, a man has been found guilty of the assassination by a special UN-backed court.

Mr Hariri was Lebanon’s most prominent Sunni Muslim politician. He had close ties with the United States and with Sunni Gulf Arab states, and was seen as a threat to Iranian and Syrian influence in Lebanon.

At the end of an investigation and trial that lasted 15 years, Salim Ayyash was found guilty of assassinating Hariri.

His three co-defendants were acquitted. All are members of the Iranian-backed Shia militant group Hezbollah — and their whereabouts are unknown
